Sudipta Das Gupta

Biography

Sudipta Das Gupta is an anthropologist who works in the fields of Rohingya refugee studies, Biopolitics of health and care, Biocitizenship and Tuberculosis Health care, and Critical Medical Anthropology (CMA). His educational background includes a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Anthropology from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh. During his under-graduation program, he has examined the Refugee Health Governance in the Rohingya refugee camp, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, focusing on theories of Michel Foucault’s Biopolitics and Governmentality. During post-graduation program, his work has focused on the Making of “Idealized Body” of Tuberculosis Patients through the health care services in Bangladesh and the role of Biological Citizenship into it, which was also influenced by the works of French philosopher Michel Foucault.

Sudipta is currently working as a Research Officer at an International health research institute, known as icddr,b (International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh), based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Before his current position, he worked as a Research Assistant in the field of Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Bangladesh program at BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health, Brac University and served as a Teaching Fellow at the Master of Public Health of Brac University. He has also worked as Research Monitor and Research Assistant at Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Program (JHUCCP) and Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) respectively in his early carrier days.

Sudipta has executed four research projects with a special focus on the Rohingyas, living in the Refugee Camps at Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. His first research project focused on the mechanism and process of marginalization of Rohingya children in terms of receiving necessary services and facilities in the refugee camp.. His second research project understood the effect of refugee status and cultural practices of Rohingya people regarding the violence against Rohingya women and girls in the Refugee Camp. His third and fourth works examined the role of communication in the Refugee Health care settings to ensure “Proper” health care for Rohingya Refugees; and the health-related rights of Rohingya children, living in the refugee camp of Bangladesh in relation to the available healthcare system, respectively. 

Sudipta has started publishing widely in scholarly journals, and edited volumes in English, and Bangla. He is also looking for opportunities to collaborate with enthusiastic researchers and academicians from Anthropology and Public Health backgrounds.
